Something old Something new
One of the oldest houses in Hampton Roads Virginia, this cottage was built sometime in the early 1600's. Built of solid masonry walls and veneer plaster the house has weathered the years remarkably well.
Asked to design an addition that would not compete with the existing house, the owner wanted additional space that would separate itself while providing more contemporary living area. The addition is rotated towards an existing view and provides means to detach iteself as a new volume. The addition is tied to the historic home by a lower glass filled space deferring prominence to the main structure.
