Construction began in spring 2009 for this Virginia Beach, Virginia facility designed as a campus for the school system's department of transportation and bus services. Now nearing compleation, it will operate as a cleaner, high-performance and technologically-advanced facility, with more comfortable working environments. Such facilities are often potential environmental liabilities. Dills Architects designed this 90,000-sf campus to achieve a LEED Gold Rating for environmental design and construction. Living green roofs, naturalized landscaping, rain gardens, and bio-infiltration beds will treat 100% of the storm water, and aid in the cleaning of any possible petrol-chemical runoff that may occur from parking areas. Typically dark and cold in similar structures, the interior service areas will be lit with daylight to minimize overhead light use, and the concrete floor will be heated through solar hot water from PV collectors on the south facing roof. LEED Platinum Certification is pending. http://www.vbschools.com/school_renovation/schools/pupil_trans_facility.asp |
