On the island of Vieques, east of the main island of Puerto Rico, the Mosquito pier projects into the Caribbean Atlantic. The project includes two locations for ferry landing shelters, as well as a ferry terminal at the end of the pier. The structures are built of concrete and coated in plaster using a local method. The roofs are steel reinforced concrete waffle slabs using pan forms to allow for longer spans, but able to withstand storms and frequent hurricanes. The project uses roof forms that terrace one another to provide shelter from the sun and rain, but also to take advantage of the primary breezes that help to cool the waiting areas. |
