College Park Elementary School
This elementary school brings with it a new generation of design to Virginia Beach City Public Schools. Designed as a replacement for College Park Elementary School, it is also intended to serve as a prototypical design to replace several beach elementary schools in the future. The school is two stories with 85,000 square feet of area, and 34 classrooms. The school's circulation moves around an open semi-circular courtyard that doubles as a storm water feature and outdoor teaching area. The school is being certified to a LEED platinum level for environmental stewardship, which is the highest rating given through the USGBC. We designed the building to have a net-zero energy use, meaning that it generates as much energy as it produces. The schools sustainable features include a green roof over the canopies, rain water collection and reuse for 100% of the non-potable use, geo-thermal cooling, solar PV and thermal collectors and natural/sensored day lighting. The site will have zero storm water runoff using rain gardens and infiltration paver areas. The project opened for occupancy in the fall 2011. http://www.vbschools.com/school_renovation/schools/collegepark.asp |
